Manny Flicek was born on August 29, 1940 in Mahnomen, MN to James and Rose (Ruzica) Flicek. He grew up on a farm, in a Czech family, on the White Earth Indian Reservation. He milked cows, raised beef and pork, and grew crops. It was on this farm that Manny developed his passion for horses that remained throughout his entire life.
Manny was a true horseman. He enjoyed starting and training horses to ride or drive. He ran a riding stable for a few years and showed horses in games his entire life. Manny loved to ride with his family and friends. The farm in Big Lake was thee place to ride. Anyone with a horse had an open invitation. Sundays at noon was full of friends trail riding all year long.
Manny received his diploma in Farrier Science from Anoka Technical College in 1969. His knowledge and dedication to horseshoeing and trimming allowed him to excel for over 40 years in the field.
Manny was happily married to his wife, Bobbie (Bemis) for 52 years. Together they raised four children in Big Lake, MN before retiring to Fort Ripley, MN in 2005. Family was very important to Manny and he took great pride in the closeness that his family shares.
Manny’s oldest daughter Toni lives in Fort Ripley with her husband John and their daughters, Isabel and Gabi. Their daughter and Manny’s oldest granddaughter Mandy live in Winthrop, MN with her husband Nathan and their daughter Taylor. Manny’s youngest daughter Stacie lives in Cambridge, MN with her husband Jerry and their son, Maddox and daughter, Addison.
Manny has two sons who both followed in his path and became farriers. His son, Ricky lives in Fort Ripley, MN with his wife Nanci. Their daughter, Jessica lives in Foley, MN with her daughters Jayda and Joslyn. Their daughter Trisha lives in Foley, MN with her daughter, Halle. Their daughter Mindy lives in Little Falls, MN with her son Gavin and daughter, Serena. Their son Jon lives in El Paso, TX. Manny’s son Jamie lives in Princeton, MN with his wife, Christine and their daughter Samantha and sons Marqus, James and Manny. Manny also has a special god daughter, Cindy Frane who lives in Zimmerman, MN with her husband Scott.
Manny was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lorraine; brother, Jimmy; and his two great grandchildren, Trevor and Dillan, who no doubt are happy to ride with great grandpa again.
