Roman Schultz Obituary Roman (Romie) Vincent Schultz of Brainerd, Minnesota, age 88, passed away July 18, 2014 at Lakewood Health System Hospital in Staples, Minnesota. He was born in the little town of Lamberton in southern Minnesota to Mike and Catherine (Diedrich) Schultz as their third son on October 19, 1925, and grew up there learning the game of baseball which he loved and played well into his senior years. While in high school he played on baseball teams that won the Minnesota High School State Championships for three years straight. After graduating from high school in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was commissioned an ensign line officer after three years of college in the NROTC program at the University of Minnesota. Having served 24 years of qualified service-time, he chose to end his military career and retire and did so with the rank of Commander in the year 1985. Teaching young people was part of his goal in life, and after earning a Bachelor's degree, he began a career in the field of education and did not retire until after thirty-six years of dedication to his commitments. Wanting to improve his professional skills further, he obtained a Master's degree in Educational Psychology in order to become a guidance counselor and enjoyed this position for twenty-two years at Franklin Junior High School in Brainerd, Minnesota. Romie enjoyed participating in family fun activities whether it be skiing, camping, bow hunting, or just watching the children take part in their own game play. In his passing, he is leaving behind his sweetheart of nearly 60 years of marriage, Joanie. They were married August 21, 1954. Also left to cherish his memory are his five children: son Richard Schultz, twins Brian Schultz and Brad Schultz (Vicki), daughters Lori Ann Schultz and Teresa Petron (Mike). Also surviving are four grandsons: Timothy Schultz (Sarah), Thomas Schultz, Jordon Petron, and Tyler Petron; step-granddaughter Katie James (Jeremy);and great-grandson Demond Schultz. Two brothers and a sister have passed away, leaving one sister, Kathleen Baptista of Belo Horizante, Brazil as the remaining member of the family. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd, Minnesota 10:30 AM Friday, July 25, 2014, with his son, Father Brian Schultz, presiding. Friends may call at the church of Friday the hour prior to services. Burial with Military Honors will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota Romie's wishes were that no flowers be sent, but rather memorials be given to the Education of Seminaries Fund of the Diocese of Duluth. The Schultz family would like to express deep gratitude to the Lakewood Home Care/ Hospice and the Lakewood Health System for their compassionate and excellent care.
