Gary Wayne Smith, passed away August 19, 2026, a month prior to his 85th birthday, after complications from surgery. Gary was born September 21, 1941, to proud parents Wayne and Ann (Young) Smith, in Wadena, Minnesota.

A celebration of life will be held at The Woods - B Merri (19624 County Road 3 - Brainerd), on Sunday, September 27, 2026 from 2-5:00 p.m. 

Gary grew up in Verndale, MN and was a proud graduate from the Class of 1959! Gary had a wonderful childhood growing up on a farm surrounded by family. The Smith and Young family reunions were legendary!

Gary married Cathy Tervola August 4, 1962. They lived in St. Paul for 9 years then moved to Brainerd in 1971. Gary and Cathy were owners of many local businesses including the Tom Thumb store on 6th St., Northeast Tom Thumb store, Market Square, Snow White Laundry and Car Wash, and Mr. Tubbs laundry.

Gary was an extremely hard worker who rarely sat still; he worked from sun-up to sun-down at his stores and took great pride in the beautiful landscaping around his home on Rice Lake.

Gary cherished his family and was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Gary was a kind and gentle man…always putting others first! We are going to miss Gary…but we are so thankful for the times we shared with him and the many memories we will cherish!

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Cathy; son-in-law, Dave Stimac; and his amazing grandchildren Annie and Jon Stimac; his many nieces and nephews; and many wonderful family and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Elaine and Diane, and daughter Christy.

Arrangements are being handled by Nelson-Doran Funeral Home.
