Greg Tarvas Obituary Gregory Jon Tarvas, age 59, died on Thursday, February 10, 2022 in his home in Crosslake, MN, surrounded by the love of his family. In 2014, Greg had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer. This did not stop him from embarking upon many adventures, as he continued to do the things he enjoyed. He went on multiple camping trips with his kids, hiked through the Boundary Waters, canoed, kayaked, enjoyed ATV rides and long bike rides. He road-tripped across the country with his two big brothers in September of 2019, attended family gatherings and events, enjoyed stays with his parents in Carlton and at the family cabin in Cotton, MN -- where he appreciated the sauna. Greg loved the great outdoors and he cherished his children and family dearly. Greg was born on January 31st, 1963 in Duluth, MN. He graduated from Carlton High School in 1981. He had a few different jobs in his younger yearssuch as working for Super One in Duluth, MN and working for the San Onofre Power Plant in California---before he eventually became a US Postal Service (USPS) city carrier in 1989 in San Juan Capistrano, CA. He transferred to Glenview, IL in 1993 as a carrier, then transferred to Brainerd, MN in 1995 where he was a carrier for the last 24 years of his 30-year Postal career, retiring in 2019. In 2005, Greg was featured in a Brainerd newspaper as well as the national USPS publication as being a "HERO" for helping out a customer on his route that may have died of hypothermia had he not been there and cared for him. Greg would help anyone at any time throughout his life. He was a kind, humble, dependable, funny, deep-thinking, talented, adventurous, loving and a spiritual soul. People who knew him knew that he showed his excitement in an understated way. He would greet an exciting moment with his signature low-key response of Huh, or sometimes even Wow. Greg had the greatest laugh in the world, which will truly be missed. Greg is preceded in death by his grandparents, Katherine and Ole Tarvas (Duluth); grandparents, Ethel and Curtis Stewart (Duluth); uncle, Donald Steward (Esko); uncle, Jim and aunt, Gail Dahlberg (Esko), and uncle, Charles "Chuck" McDonald (Duluth). He is survived by his three children, Joshua, Andrew, and Amanda Tarvas of Crosslake; his parents, Raymond and Mary Tarvas of Carlton; brothers, Ray Tarvas (Kay Moe) of Mountain Iron and Jeff Tarvas (Penny) of Iron; his sisters, Diane Norkunas (Chris) of Chaffey, WI and Aliza Vernon (Curt Pianalto) of Carlton; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and friends that he loved very much. A special thank you to the staff at Essentia Health-St. Josephs Medical Center who took such great care of Greg throughout his years of Chemo treatments. And a special thank you, also, to the staff at the Good Samaritan Society-Homecare (Nisswa). A celebration of Gregs life will be held at a future date in the spring.
