Herbert Barrett Obituary Herbert Barrett, age 98, resident of Brainerd, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at his home. Herb Barrett was born on a farm north of Rolfe, Iowa on March 17, 1916 to Herbert Eugene Barrett and Chrystel Christiansen Barrett. He lived on several farms in the Rolfe area until 1928 when his family moved to Oregon where they lived for four years. In 1932, the family returned to live in Indianola, Iowa. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1934. He attended Simpson College in Indianola for one year. He then worked on farms near Indianola and Rolfe, Iowa. In 1945, he was drafted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Farrogot, Idaho, Corvallis, Oregon, and Bremerton, Washington. He was released from the Navy in 1946. He married Julia Ravnik from Crosby, MN in 1948. They lived in the Rolfe area until 1954, when they bought a farm near Brainerd. He built a successful dairy operation until selling it to his son, Jim in 1988. He continued working on the farm until the dairy herd was sold in 2002. He was elected to the Daggett Brook Township Board in 1975 and served for 28 years. He joined St. Mathias Catholic Church in 1963 and was a church trustee for 28 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia in 2010, his parents, his sisters, Marilyn and Dorothy. He is survived by his children, Mike (Bunny) Barrett, Jim (Sharon) Barrett, Maribeth (Paul) Grimsby, John Barrett, and Elisabeth (Roger) Wicklund and grandchildren, Jimmy and Ryan Barrett, Brett Barrett, Leah Fischer, Tom and Sarah Barrett, Michael, Eric and Elyssa Grimsby, and Nate and Jack Wicklund and great-grandchildren, Theo Barrett and Zachary Grimsby. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13,2014 at St. Mathias Catholic Church in St. Mathias Township. Visitation will begin the hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in St. Mathias Catholic Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to St. Mathias Catholic Church.
