James "Jim" Douglas Willis

James "Jim" Willis, 75, of Brainerd, passed away peacefully in the home he loved, surrounded by the people he loved most, on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

Jim was born on April 15, 1951, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Guy and Helen (Myers) Willis.

At the age of 18, Jim proudly enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. His military service remained one of the greatest sources of pride throughout his life.

Jim was a man who could do just about anything. A gifted cook and talented handyman, there wasn't much he couldn't fix. He enjoyed spending hours putzing in his woodworking shop, creating projects with the same patience and craftsmanship he brought to everything he did. An accomplished taxidermist, Jim preserved countless fish, deer, raccoons, and bears over the years, combining his artistic eye with his love of the outdoors.

Fishing was more than a hobby—it was a passion. Some of his favorite memories were made chasing muskies on Lake of the Woods in Canada and gathering afterward with family and friends for a fresh fish fry. He also looked forward to evenings around the card table, whether playing poker or cribbage, where the competition was friendly, the laughter was plentiful, and the stories only grew better with time.

Jim was the ultimate Minnesota Vikings fan. He faithfully held season tickets for more than 30 years, enduring every exhilarating victory and heartbreaking defeat with unwavering loyalty. Through it all, he always believed this would be the year.

While Jim enjoyed many hobbies, nothing brought him greater happiness than his family. Loving, caring, and fiercely loyal, he treasured every opportunity to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He never turned down the chance to babysit and was a natural nurturer, always making those around him feel safe, welcomed, and loved.

A friend to all and a best friend to many, Jim was known for his generous heart and willingness to help anyone in need. He freely gave of his time, opened his home to family and friends, and loved nothing more than hosting gatherings where everyone felt like they belonged. A true extrovert and lifelong prankster, Jim had a contagious sense of humor that could brighten any room and create memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Kathy; his sons, Josh (Sam) Willis and Shawn (Christine) Willis; 10 cherished grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five siblings; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Helen, and one brother.

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home, with Military Honors. Family and friends will be invited to gather for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at Onamia Veterans Cemetery.

Jim's legacy is one of service, laughter, generosity, and unconditional love. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family forever grateful for the example he set. Though he will be deeply missed, his stories, jokes, and larger-than-life spirit will live on in all who knew and loved him.
