Joseph Fraune Obituary Joseph William Fraune, age 84, resident of Brainerd passed away Tuesday, June 25 at his home. Joseph was born September 18, 1939, in Bertha, MN to William and Helen (Peka) Fraune. He grew up in Bertha and graduated from Bertha-Hewitt High School in 1957. Joseph attended college at St. Johns university in 1957 and earned a biology degree when he graduated in 1961. Joes career with the Minnesota DNR was for 38 years from June 21, 1961 until June 12, 1999. Joe had held various positions with the DNR including a brief time in St Paul before taking the job in Brainerd. He was one of the first people with a biology degree that was hired by the DNR at that time. He had countless stories of experiences working for the DNR which included taking a couple of the past governors of Minnesota on opening of fishing trips. He was very proud of the work that he had done at the DNR and was an advocate and passionate for working to protect the natural resources of the lakes and fish population in the lakes he managed. He was instrumental in working on getting the trout programs developed in the Cuyuna mine areas of Northern Minnesota as well. He spent many years in the position of the Area Fishery Manager for the Brainerd lakes area. Joe enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed his trip to South Dakota Pheasant hunting as well as deer hunting with his nephews and friends. Joe enjoyed raising cattle as well as horses throughout his life. Joe had his own sawmill that he had made lumber for the many projects that he enjoyed building including his lake home on Gull Lake. Joe had the unique ability to be able to talk to anyone on various subjects and had a very quick wit and sense of humor that he enjoyed deploying on his friends. He will be greatly missed for his sense of humor, smile and conversations and knowledge of life. Survivors include his daughter Lisa (Mike) Muehlbauer, Brothers Mark (Kris) and John Fraune, sister-in-law Marie Fraune and his former wife Fay Abrahamson and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife Elaine, his daughter Susan, parents Bill and Helen Fraune, brothers Paul and Michael Fraune. A memorial service will be held, 11am Saturday, July 13th at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home, visitation will begin one hour prior to the Service, burial will be at the Vaale cemetery.
