Larry Wayne Helsene, age 80, of Brainerd, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Essentia Health – St. Joseph's Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his family.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. at Nelson–Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd. A Celebration of Life, honoring his service to his community and his country, will take place on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Camp Ripley Memorial Chapel, with visitation beginning one hour prior. Interment with full Military Honors will follow at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.

Larry was born on October 17, 1944, in Breckenridge, Minnesota, to Walden and Catherine Helsene (Beckius). He grew up in a large, blended family and carried with him the values of loyalty, perseverance, and service that would define his life.

Following his graduation from high school, Larry answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the Minnesota National Guard. He dedicated decades of service with distinction, ultimately attaining the rank of Command Sergeant Major. His leadership, loyalty, and commitment to his fellow soldiers earned him the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him.

In addition to his military service, Larry devoted 22 years to protecting and serving his community as a police officer with the Brainerd Police Department. Known for his professionalism, fairness, and quick wit, he served with honor and integrity, leaving a lasting impact on those he worked with and the community he safeguarded.

Larry possessed an extraordinary work ethic and a remarkable range of skills. A self-taught mechanic, craftsman, and gunsmith, he approached every project with determination and pride. Photography was one of his greatest passions, and he shared his knowledge generously as an instructor at Central Lakes College and through his active involvement with the Brainerd Photography Club.

Beyond his service and accomplishments, Larry cherished life's simple joys. He had a deep love for classic cars, community gatherings, and most of all, his family. His greatest joy was found in the time he shared with his children and grandchildren, who will forever remember his warmth, humor, and steadfast love.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Erica (Jon) Henke; his son, Chris (Julie) Helsene, his grandchildren, Evelyn, Timothy, and Joseph Helsene, and Zachary and Katherine Henke; his lifelong friend and cousin, Brad Demmon; his dear friend, Bobbie Sarff; and his beloved cat, Tabitha.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walden and Catherine; his stepfather, James Eyestone; his stepmother, Donna Helsene; his brothers, Russ, Dale, and Rick; and his lifelong friends, Connie Nelson and Aloma Gullick.

Larry's life was defined by service, dedication, and love. His legacy as a soldier, officer, teacher, and family man will endure in the lives of those he touched. He will be deeply missed and always remembered with gratitude and respect.
