Obituary

Marjorie Ann Converse, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 82 years old.

Born on April 20, 1943, to Hjalmer and Katherine (Fruth) Swanson, Marjorie was raised with strong family values and a deep appreciation for learning and service. A proud graduate of Washington High School in 1961, she went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from St. Catherine University (St. Kate's) in 1965, setting the foundation for a life devoted to family, community, and education.

On August 6, 1965, Marjorie married James C.E. Converse, beginning a partnership marked by enduring love, shared adventures, and deep commitment. Together, they raised four children, and Marjorie poured her heart into motherhood - finding joy and purpose in nurturing her family. Marjorie began teaching sewing at Madison Area Technical College, giving her a night away and Jim a chance to "get to know the kids".

As her children grew, Marjorie reentered the workforce in earnest, assisting during busy seasons at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Bookstore. What began as part-time support evolved into a meaningful role she cherished, contributing a few days each week and enjoying the camaraderie and pace of the university environment.

After nearly four decades away from Brainerd, Marjorie and James returned to fulfill a longtime dream: building their home on the peaceful shores of Bass Lake, where James grew up. Retirement brought her closer to the natural beauty she loved and the community that had shaped her.

Marjorie will be remembered for her kindness, her quiet strength, her unwavering devotion to family, and the warmth she brought to every room. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, James; their four children James C.E. Converse II, Julie M. Converse, Mark C. Converse (Virgo Degan), and Katherine A. Converse (Damon Henderson); 5 grandchildren, Gregory Henderson, Earl Birt IV, Jazmyn Converse, Danielle Strong (Ray), Dominick McCormick (Brittany); six great-grandchildren, and extended family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Myrna O'Neil.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 11am. Visitation will begin at 10am. Luncheon to follow.
