Allen “Al or Butch” Sylvester Mulroy Sr., 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, in Brainerd, MN on October 20, 2021. A Celebration of Al’s Life will be held on his birthday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23, 2021, at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Fort Ripley. Family and friends are invited to gather Friday evening from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Nelson – Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and one hour prior to Mass at the church on Saturday.
He was born October 23, 1945, to Sylvester Mulroy and Irene (Peterson) Mulroy, in Wahpeton, ND. He graduated Highschool in Wayzata, MN and attended Dunwoody Institute. He married Glenda Pearl Blankenship in Watertown, SD. The couple were married for 42 years.
They moved to Fort Ripley, MN. She was a nurse and he taught auto body at Milaca Technical College. He loved teaching auto body and was loved by his students - many who became like children to him. Later her taught welding at CLC in Brainerd and worked as an auto appraiser and a welder.
Allen and Glenda had four children and helped raise many other children in the neighborhood and even some during their college years. Their house was always full - full of love, laughter, and children of all ages. Allen enjoyed art of all types: painting, metal art, and dancing. He also liked to be outdoors fishing, feeding birds, or target practicing. He loved to give gifts, teach, and celebrate Valentine's Day. Butch enjoyed visiting with his friends at Saint Mathias Bar, but “Grandpa Donut” never passed up a chance to spend time with his family, especially his 13 grandchildren.
After the passing of his wife, and because of many medical complications of his own, Allen became wheelchair bound and made a new home at Carefree Living. He was loved and cared for by their loving staff and the wonderful people at Heartland Hospice.
Allen has joined his wife; his parents; and his siblings, Michael, and Douglas Sr. in Heaven.
He leaves behind his four children, Robin (Jeremy) Churchill, Tonia (Stan, Jr.) Dobosenski, Allen, Jr. (Jessica McKay) Mulroy, and Kimberly (Adam) Pickar; grandchildren, Hunter, Hayden, and Sally Churchill; Zoe, Gemma, and Mazie Dobosenski; Shelby, Kali, and Ty Mulroy; and Melody, Addie, Paisley, and Marek Pickar; and father-in-law, Paul Althoff.
Note from his children:
After a long, hard fought battle Dad has made his journey. We are all relieved that he is no longer in pain but horribly sad as well. We Love him and will miss him so much. We were all with him. We stayed by his side for the last 2 days and nights. Praying, thanking him for raising us to love and support one another and making us a great team, teaching us kindness, humor, how to love, how to fight, how to dance and how to shoot, and sharing awesome memories of cool experiences with him and supporting in his transition as well as we could. He told us during his fight (when he could talk) that he "has to clear the path" and that "My wife would come back and open the door and I just have to wait for her to come back." He also told us the little boy who he sees when he is very sick (who he believes is his guardian angel) was "Getting his things." Just before he passed he watched something pass over him and stop right where he pointed to the door that he was waiting to be opened. His entire demeanor and breathing changed. He had a very pleasant moment of clarity, surprise and calm and passed peacefully.
