Barbara Worms Obituary

Barbara Rose Porwall Worms, of Brainerd, passed away June 19th, 2020 at the age of 75, from complications of congestive heart failure. Barbara was born September 28th, 1944. Recently, Barbara had moved to the home of her daughter, Mary-Beth Maras, son -in-Law Anthony Maras and granddaughters Julia & Maia Maras, of Minneapolis. She died peacefully surrounded by her loving, and adoring family, at her daughter's home. While her passing was expected, her family is devastated by her death, nonetheless.

Barb was in her essence, an artist. She loved to paint, sculpt, knit, and was an amazing seamstress. Her talents for creating beautiful art were absolutely spectacular. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Her friends speak of her intelligence, honesty, and forthright humor. She was also a loving pet owner of both cats and dogs, having had many over the years, all of whom will be awaiting her in heaven. She spent most of her career as an administrator with the Minnesota State Patrol. She considered them a second family. She was especially troubled by the events of the last few weeks and worried about the safety of her law enforcement friends.

Barb was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; her parents Cyril & Eileen; her sister, Patricia and her baby brother, Paul. She is survived by her daughter, Mary-Beth Worms (Anthony Maras); her son, Mark (Nicole) Worms; four grandchildren, Julia & Maia Maras and Zachary & Elizabeth Worms; her brother, Cy Porwall; sister-in-law, Kathy; and many nieces and nephews.

Her entire life was built around her family. She made friends everywhere she went, but she was especially fond of her dear friend Betty. She was born in the era of "children should be seen, not heard", but still loved talking every day to her daughter. She leaves behind a loving family of dysfunctional goofballs. She always spoke the truth, even when it wasn't what we wanted to hear. She was a shining example of perseverance, having been dealt severe health challenges throughout her life. She is a testament that with a little stubbornness and faith, you can overcome anything. You always knew where you stood with her as she either liked you or she didn't. All who loved her, will remember her tenacity, wit, intellect and undying love. As we all struggle with her loss, we lean on the Almighty God to get us through this difficult time and we remember the words of Aeschylus, “Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart. Until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the aweful grace of God.”

Barbara's Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, June 27th at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd. Visitation will be held at Nelson Doran Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00pm on Friday, June 26th.  She will rest in eternal peace at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd.
