Donald Kost, age 95, passed away January 2, 2021 at Hills Crossing Senior Living in Nisswa. Per Don’s wishes there will be no memorial service. A private interment will be held at a later date at Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery near Camp Ripley.
Donald Frederick Kost was born January 15, 1925 in St. Cloud, MN, to Robert and Ann Kost. He graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School and enlisted in the US Army, serving from 1943 until 1946. Don always said it was his pleasure to serve his country in WWII. Upon his honorable discharge, Don married Bernice Peschl and they had four children. Don and Bernice moved to Brainerd in 1959 and Don owned and operated Tee Pee Oil Co. and opened the first Super America gas station in Brainerd. After selling his interests in the gas and oil business, Don worked for several years in the Crow Wing County Recorder’s Office.
Don enjoyed many hobbies over the years - hunting, fishing, woodworking, and his favorite hobby: flying airplanes.
Don will be missed by his children, Susan Mortenson, of Nisswa, Geraldine (Mark) Nierengarten of Duluth, Jeanne Ward of Pequot Lakes, and John (Cindy) Kost of Hastings; nine grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bernice; brother, Walter; and son-in-law, Larry Mortenson.
Don’s family is very grateful to the staff at Hill Crossing Senior Living in Nisswa for the loving and compassionate care provided Don for the past three years and to St. Croix Hospice for the comfort care provided in the last weeks of his life.
