Jean was born June 8, 1935, in Philbrook Township, MN, the daughter of Elmer and Ruth (Halberg) Killian. She grew up in the Staples/Motley area. She met the love of her life, Edward Martin at a dance in Nisswa. The couple married at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd on January 31, 1953. Jean raised her family and worked various jobs outside the home: bank teller, retail associate at JC Penny’s, insurance agent and real estate agent. Jean loved to dance; she and Ed enjoyed slow dancing and the jitterbug. She liked to play Bingo and was very fond of traveling. She loved her family dearly and cherished the holidays, especially Christmas when she was able to have everyone gather (and bring all their babies for her to snuggle!).
She will be greatly missed by her husband of 68 years, Ed; children, Debra (Bruce) Esse, of Eagan, Joseph (Teresa) Martin, of Appleton, MN, LuAnn (Owen) Holleman, of Siren, WI, Gwendolyn (Rodney) Schwartz, of Siren, WI, and Patricia (Dwight) Affeldt, of Orono, MN; grandchildren, Adam, Nathan, Christina, Anita, Joe Jr., Beth, Kyle, Shannon, Brendan, Gina Lee, Paul “P.J.”, and Michael; 13 great-grandchildren; step-siblings, Lynn Mathiasen, of Waite Park and William Skeesick, of Staples; and many extended family members and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings and one precious great-granddaughter “Maddie”.
Memorials preferred to either Debra Esse or Patricia Affeldt (A tree will be purchased and planted with a plaque in Jean’s memory. There will also be a paver purchased in her name at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Any remaining moneys will be donated to their care facility New Perspectives in Prior Lake MN.)
