Jerry Marvin Mertens, 63, of Fort Ripley, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 14, 2022. A Celebration of Jerry’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 20, 2022, at Nelson – Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd. Family and friends are invited to gather Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. and again one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home. There will be a luncheon to follow at the Eagle’s Club.
Jerry was born July 2, 1958, in Little Falls, the son of Marvin and Loretta (Busbey) Mertens. After graduating from high school, Jerry spent many years working as a carpenter for Hy-Tec Construction. In 1979, Jerry married Lisa Ohlsson (Perlinger) and they shared 20 years together and were blessed with three children. After their divorce, they remained friends. Jerry loved spending time at the Eagles, American Legion, St. Mathias Bar, The Fort, or whatever location he could have a drink and enjoy his friends. He liked to play Bingo, hunt, and fish. And although his stubbornness may be unmatched, so was his willingness to help his family and friends. His big heart will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his children, Theresa (Jason) Kruchten, Tracy Mertens, Brian (Cassie) Mertens; grandchildren, Lucas, Mallory, Brandon (Beth-El), Stephanie, Kaidence, Benjamin, Alexander, and Louis; one great-grandson on the way; his siblings, Sandra (Dave Newman) Mertens, Charlotte (Bob) Warner, Tom (Dawn) Mertens, and Linda (Rick) Pickar; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
