John "Jack" Veit Obituary

John A. “Jack” Veit, 89, of Brainerd, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Harmony House in Brainerd after a short battle with Alzheimer’s.

John was born August 20, 1934, on the Veit Farm east of Brainerd, the son of John P. and Ruby M. (Colfield) Veit.  In 1952, he graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd.  He married Angeline K. Smude on February 4, 1955, and together they raised six children:  John (Judy) Veit, of Alaska, Anita (Greg) Straka, of Brainerd, Tom Veit, of Baxter, Brenda (Dale) Hill, of Pine River, Luann (Craig) Holst, of Fort Ripley, and Lori (Rodney) Welch, of St. Joseph; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.  In 1992, John and Angie divorced.  Later, John was married to Janice Cahoon for a short time.

John had a few jobs before he bought Emmett Aylward House Moving in 1959. In 1977, John became a partner in Verndale Custom Homes, operating the moving aspect of the business. He sold the business in 1986 and began working for Hengel Construction and later Anderson Brothers until his retirement. John had horses and dogs his entire life. He was an avid outdoorsmen and huntsman. Everyone who knew John surely listened to his hunting stories a time or too.

John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Maxine; brother-in-law, Bruce Tanhoff; infant grandson; and first wife, Angie.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 23, 2023, at Nelson – Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd.
