Robert (Bobby) Leroy Thompson passed away peacefully in his sleep February 3, 2024, at the age of 88 years old. Bobby was born on May 12th in 1935 to Frank and Elaine (Cook) Thompson. Bobby grew up and lived his entire life in Brainerd. He had a passion for baseball, stock car racing and snowmobiling. Bobby was a star baseball player in high school. He was on the Nisswa baseball team when they won the many championships. After high school, he caught the eye of the Chicago White Sox and was invited to play for them. Bobby loved racing; he won many races with his dirt track cars and several races on his snowmobile. In 1966, he won the Minnesota State Stock Car Racing Championship where he raced against Darrell Waltrip and Dick Trickle. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin on Glanders Lake - tinkering around and mowing his large lawn. He loved fixing things, especially anything with a motor, and would always help a friend who needed a hand. Bobby was an avid fisherman & hunter. He served in the Army Reserves from 1959-1964. Bobby retired from Brainerd Water and Light after over 30 years of service. He was a past member of the Brainerd Elks and Eagles, and he served as a board member for the South Long Lake Township.
Bobby is survived by the love of his life Kaye Liebeg whom he shared the last 45 years of his life. He is also survived by four children, Thomas Thompson (Tami Webb), Timothy & Rae Thompson, Tamara & Richard Felton, and Terry Thompson (Natalie Saatoff); 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren, two brothers Gary (Janet) Thompson and Francis “Pewee” (Marie) Thompson; and special neighbor friends Mark, Tom & Esther. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Frank & Elaine Thompson, stepmother Beryl, brother and sister in-law Jerry & Renee Thompson and his many dogs who were all named Bingo. Our thanks go out to Saint Croix Hospice and Pierz Villa who did a wonderful job taking care of him in his final days. Private interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery on South Long Lake.
