Roy Cheney Obituary

Roy Cheney, 82, resident of Brainerd, died on September 27th, 2020 in Brainerd, MN. Roy was born November 15th, 1937 to Merwin & Irma (Fair) Cheney. He farmed until he enlisted in the US Army – 29th Engineer Battalion. Roy was married to Elaine (Fruth) Cheney for 17 years and had two children, Debra and Duane. He married Karen (Koop) in 1977.

Roy served as a Brainerd Patrolman and retired after 21 years of service. During his service he also spent several years as an investigator. He worked for Cass County as the head of Boat and Water Program for 8 years and taught High Precision Driving at Hibbing Technical College for their Law Enforcement Program.

Roy was always a strong and capable person always willing to help in any capacity. He was a member of MPPOA & the American Legion. He enjoyed many hobbies and enjoyed sharing them and his time with his family. His hobbies included camping, square dancing, 4-wheeling, hiking, motorcycling and car racing. Roy raced stock cars for many years as well. He loved working in his garage on projects, fixing, adapting, and inventing all sorts of things. Roy and his wife spent many winters in Texas and Arizona. Roy loved and was so proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments, and he adored his great grand boys.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents, brother Gary, sister Mary, and son Duane. He is survived by his wife Karen, daughter Deb (Rick) Cole, grandson Anthony (Nicole) Cole, granddaughter Savannah Cole, his great-grandson’s Harrison and Lincoln Cole, brother Lee Cheney, Al (Joy) Cheney, sisters Terry (Jay) Orton, Sue Zilligan, Diane Cheney and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral was held Friday October 2nd at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery with family.
